Tracking my food intake and my steps

To go along with my Noom program, I’m tracking all my food intake. Now, I’m not getting crazy here. Not yet, anyway. I’m only tracking the food and the number of calories.

In the past I’d create an Excel spreadsheet with calories along with a breakdown of grams of fat, protein, and carb, plus fiber. Not this time!

I’m tracking everything at Google Sheets, which, in case you don’t know, is like Excel on the web.

Tracking my food is one of the great ways to keep myself from eating junk. If I have to enter it into a spreadsheet, I am far less likely to consume it.

The potato chips I ate last night seem to belie this. Maybe I’m kidding myself. But at least I’m tracking!

Creating my Noom profile

Today I created my full profile at Noom, and I was impressed with the depth of the questioning.

Not only was I asked about my age, weight, height, but also about my preferences regarding diet and fitness routine. Do I primarily want to lose weight? Do I primarily want to get into shape?

I was asked how much coaching I need, and what kind of coaching it should be. Am I an experienced fitness warrior who is self-motivated, or am I less inclined to help myself?

I like that kind of personalization.

It’s October 28, 2019, and I signed up for Noom today

I’d been avoiding Noom. It costs money. It involves interacting with people. It means I’ll be tracking all my food and steps.

Ugh.

But … my best friend has been Nooming for a couple months, and, dammit, she’s seeing great results. In fact, she’s hit her goal!

I need that in my life these days, hitting fitness goals. My fitness has gone off the rails lately. I’m almost 60 years old, and while I’m still pretty spry and durable, my fitness is not where I want it to be. Perhaps Noom can help.

Healing is not so easy as we get older

I’ve been off exercise for a few months now. I’m doing quite a bit of walking, but that’s not really exercise, is it? Better than sitting on the couch, for sure, so I’ll take it.

My goal has been to allow my left shoulder to heal. It’s been hurting me for about a year now. I am not sure what caused the pain, but it feels like a torn labrum.

I don’t recall having traumatized the shoulder, but I noticed minor pain one day. I tried to work through it, as I have always done with minor pain, but six months later the joint’s mobility was very much limited, although it hadn’t affected my daily life … yet.

My fitness goals are off track. Now what?

I’m off track. Not completely off track, but I am:

  • Not exercising the way I want to
  • Gaining fat beyond my acceptable limit

I’m still maintaining a vegan-plus-eggs diet, but I injured my shoulder about a year ago, and after many months of trying to work through it, I finally figured out it was time to take time off from my workouts to let the thing heal, before I mess it up forever (if I haven’t already).

That decision to rest, though, came after I’d already put on quite a few pounds around my gut, so it’s not as if I became fat while sedentary. I was still working out. Unfortunately, my weight is now back to where it was before I started P90X in February, 2010, and I have to say I am dumbfounded by this set of circumstances.
